Illegal water bottling is a serious challenge according to the general assembly of the recently formed the Ethiopian Bottled Water and Soft Drinks Manufacturing Industries Association (EBWSDMIA).

With registered capital of over $2 billion Birr, a total of 85 bottled water producing plants with varying brands have been operating in Ethiopia.
Since the introduction of the product to the country through the Highland Springs brand by Appex Bottling Company in 1999, the sector has seen tremendous growth and almost all have been supplying their products with neck seal.
The association will have 79 member
Two young associations, one representing bottled waters and soft drinks manufacturers, and the other fruits and vegetable processors, merged late last month. The new Ethiopian Bottled Water, Soft Drinks, Fruits & Vegetables Manufacturing Industries Association will have 89 members.
The decision was made at an emergency meeting by the general assembly of the Ethiopian Bottled Water & Soft Drink Manufacturing Industries Association on February 28, 2019. Held after an initiative by the Ethiopian Fruits & Vegetables Processors Association for a merger, the assembly voiced their thoughts on the matter and passed the merger proposal with no objections and four abstentions.
A letter signed by the management of 33 local bottled water companies has been sent to the Ministry of Finance asking for the lifting of excise taxes on bottled water.
Currently around a 20 percent of excise tax is levied on packed waters. The basis for excise tax computation is the total cost of the product for items manufactured locally and CFI value in case of imported goods.

ማኅበሩ ሐሙስ፣ የካቲት 21 ቀን 2011 ዓ.ም. ባካሄደው ጠቅላላ ጉባዔ፣ ከውሳኔ ላይ የደረሰው ለገበያ በሚቀርቡት ምርቶች የአንገት ሽፋን ሳቢያ አካባቢ ላይ የሚደርሰውን ብክለት ከመቆጣጠር አንፃር ፋይዳ እንዳለው በማመኑ እንደሆነ ተገልጿል፡፡ የፕላስቲክ ጠርሙሶች ክዳን ላይ የሚጠቀለለውን ሽፋኑን ማስቀረት ሕገወጥ የውኃ አቅርቦትን ለመቆጣጠር ያስችላል ብለው በማመናቸው፣ የማኅበሩ አባላት ውሳኔ ላይ መድረሳቸውን የኢትዮጵያ የታሸገ ውኃና የለስላሳ መጠጥ አምራች ኢንዱስትሪዎች ማኅበር ፕሬዚዳንት ጌትነት በላይ (ኢንጂነር) አስታውቀዋል፡፡
ለቱ በጉባዔው ፀድቋል፡፡ ከዚህም በተጨማሪ የኢትዮጵያ የምግብና አስተዳደር እንዲሁም የኢትዮጵያ የምግብ፣ የመድኃኒትና የጤና ክብካቤ አስተዳደርና ቁጥጥር ባለሥልጣን መሠረታዊ የሆነ ጥራትን መሠረት ያደረጉ ትምህርት ተኮር ሥልጠናቸውን አቅርበዋል፡፡
